Anyone that knows Andy (Andrea Demetriades) has felt her charisma which fills any space she inhabits. I love this about her and I wanted to honour this when I photographed her. This was the fourth time I had worked with Andy, the first time was when I was fresh out of my photography degree. I felt so lucky to photograph her actor headshot (but I was also super nervous which quickly dissolved with her charm). The second time was for the poster of Sport For Jove’s “Antigone”, third was an actor portrait session and fourth was another actor portrait session.

Approaching our most recent shoot I wanted to create images that honoured her natural charisma, humility and vulnerability. As well as her versatility. Ultimately all great actors have that… SOMETHING that you can’t quite put your finger on, but you know it when they’ve got it. A familiarity perhaps? I’m not too sure. But my challenge is always to capture that something.
I wanted to construct photo setups and an environment that allowed Andy to be herself and have fun.

Its so important for me to have a connection with my clients and because I have worked with Andy so many times it has allowed me to always find something new with her. She makes my job easy because she is so generous with her energy.

When I have the opportunity to work with actors multiple times I love that I’m able to catch up with what is happening in their life. And I think this relationship shows through in the images. It’s great watching both our journeys through the images we create together. Photography has the power to expose a persons true character, their innate energy and genuine personality. This is why I think photography is so disarming, for both the sitter and the photographer.

I also love being a small part of the actors journey and watching their career unfurl. I, like many, have seen Andy weave sublime performances in: indie theatres like the Old Fitz and Sport for Jove, the professional theatre like Sydney Theatre Company; on screen shows like Squinters, Crownies and Seven Types of Ambiguity; and commercial blockbusters like All Saints.
I can’t wait to work with Andy again soon.
